Jewellery box - oval - Burr walnut - Rare Blackforrest

Jewellery box - oval - Burr walnut - Rare Blackforrest

An exceptionally beautiful and rare antique jewelry box featuring a bird on its nest in the iconic Black Forest style, dating from the late 19th century (c. 1880). This masterwork of folk art is completely hand-carved from solid walnut wood and is in a gorgeous, authentic condition with a deep warm patina. What makes this piece extra special and sought after by collectors is its elegant oval shape. Most Black Forest boxes from this period are rectangular, giving this model an exclusive and luxurious appearance. Features and details: • Top: The lid is magnificently decorated with a highly detailed, three-dimensionally carved bird with outstretched wings perched at a nest. • Sides: The sides of the box are intricately ornamented with fine relief work of graceful vines and leaves. • Feet: The box rests on four elegantly carved scroll feet (Flemish scroll style) that add extra allure. • Authentic markings: The underside bears the original, antique pencil inscriptions from the maker, including the model number "No. 22" and the dating "1880". This confirms the exact age and artisanal origin of the box. • Provenance: Switzerland / border region Germany (Brienz style). Dimensions: • Width: 20 cm • Height: 19 cm • Depth: 13 cm Condition: The box is in very good antique condition with minimal signs of aging. • Interior: Equipped with the original, stunning royal blue velvet lining. The upholstery is in exceptionally neat and clean condition, with no notable wear. • Lock & Hinges: The original brass hinge work and lock mechanism are in good working order (the key is not included). Style and Origin (Brienz Woodcarving): This box is a perfect example of high-quality Swiss naturalism from Brienz. This style is characterized by an extremely realistic, three-dimensional portrayal of nature (flora and fauna). Around 1880, during the Victorian era, these richly decorated boxes were incredibly popular among the affluent European elite, who purchased them as luxury souvenirs during their travels. The graceful, inward-curving feet are inspired by classical Baroque furniture design (scroll feet), which gives the box an extra stately character.
