Jessica Dismorr is recognised today as an important and politically engaged figure within British 20th-century modernism. In 1902, she began her artistic training at the Slade School of Fine Art, one of the few institutions at the time that allowed women to study directly from the life model. She continued her studies in France, pausing her painting to work as a nurse there during the First World War. Among the few British painters of the 1930s working in complete abstraction, Dismorr developed a distinctive modernist visual language, with many of her later portraits produced in a fully abstract form. Although she was an essential experimental artist within British Vorticism, she was later completely dismissed from Vorticist history by the movement’s self-appointed leader, Wyndham Lewis. Although Dismorr’s work was not widely appreciated during her lifetime, she is now viewed as a significant contributor to British modern art.
