In the photo, a parking garage is shown where everyday architecture is central. The strong black-and-white lines of the crosswalk lead the eye into the space, toward the illuminated wall and the door with the sign ‘Toilets’. The contrast between the dark garage, the bright fluorescent lighting, and the white surfaces creates an almost graphic composition. The image makes an ordinary, functional place into something striking: lines, light, and perspective ensure that the parking garage is not only seen as a passageway but also as an interesting visual landscape. Jeroen Molenaar (Zwolle, 1979) is a Dutch visual artist who studied at ArtEZ-CABK in Kampen from 2000 to 2004. In his work he mainly investigates space, architecture, and perspective. He often starts from elements from the urban or rural environment—lines, constructions, and spatial structures—that he abstracts and distorts. This can make what is initially recognizable, such as the markings at Cancun Airport on an airport runway, transform into a game of geometry and depth. In addition to photography, Molenaar makes paintings and spatial objects; in those as well he uses shifting lines and perspective distortions to throw the viewer off balance. His fascination with architecture and the way in which individual components together form a spatial construct runs as a red thread through his oeuvre.
