All auctions / Medals, Arms & Armor / Jean Witt - Les Sociétés Secrètes de France et d'Italie

First edition of this famous and rare historical and memoir work dedicated to secret societies operating between France and Italy during the Napoleonic era and the Restoration. The author, Jean Witt, was a complex and controversial figure, an adventurer and informant involved in the Carbonari intrigues and in the political conspiracies of the early nineteenth century. The text offers an internal analysis and unpublished extracts on the dynamics of the Carbonari, on revolutionary movements and on the esoteric-political networks of the period. Contemporary binding or period binding in stiff card with a leather label and gold-tooled titles on the spine. Shows evident signs of age, with the front hinge partially detached and wear to the margins of the spine. A genuine copy, not restored, that preserves its intact historical patina. Caillet III, 11464. In 8°, pp. 376 + 143 n.
