The Sand Museum - The Totems - Port-Barcarès - 1979 The Totems Silver gelatin print 16 x 20 The author's stamp Jean Ribière is an important French photojournalist of the 20th century, renowned for his humanist reportage on post-war France, rural life, popular traditions, and the daily life of the French regions. He began at the newspaper L’Indépendant des Pyrénées-Orientales in 1940 before, with his wife Micheline Vialle, founding the agency “Ribière Presse Photos.” Their reports were published in numerous international media such as Paris Match, L’Express, or the BBC. Jean Ribière was also committed to defending photographers' rights, notably within the A.N.J.R.P.C., alongside figures such as Robert Doisneau, Henri Cartier-Bresson, and Raymond Depardon. His photographic archive, preserved by his daughter Hélène Tabès, gathers about 120,000 photographic documents covering the period 1941-1989.
