Jean Macron (1927-2008) - Vue des Canaux de Port Grimaud

- Oil on canvas. Original canvas. Manually signed. This painting was used in 1972 for a commemorative postcard of the development known as Port Grimaud, a city and marina project built on river marshes by the architect François Spoerry. - The history of Port Grimaud is the story of a bold architectural utopia that transformed an inhospitable Blue Coast swamp into a world reference in urban planning. Conceived in the mid-1960s by the visionary Alsatian architect François Spoerry, the villa was born as an organic and nostalgic response to the dominant concrete functionalism, projecting a lakeside city where the sea would not be a mere horizon, but the main artery of the habitable space. After overcoming initial skepticism from authorities and solving complex hydraulic engineering challenges, construction began in 1966 to erect a Provençal Venice designed so that each home had its own mooring at its doorstep. Spoerry’s genius crystallized in the concept of “sweet architecture,” a philosophy that combined the aesthetics of traditional Mediterranean fishermen’s villas with a pedestrian- and navigation-oriented urban design. No façade is identical to another: variations in height, the pastel stucco color ranges, and meticulous artisanal details grant the whole a patina of a historic town that seems to have evolved over the centuries. Car-free streets, stone bridges over navigable canals, and the seamless integration of the Church of St. Francis of Assisi turned the enclave into a human-scale masterpiece of community intimacy. Across its three expansion phases up to the nineties, Port Grimaud established itself as a pioneering urban experiment and internationally acclaimed, with more than two thousand homes articulated along seven kilometers of canals. What at first was dismissed as a picturesque backdrop for bourgeois tourism received official recognition in 2002 as a “Heritage of the 20th Century” by the French Ministry of Culture. Today, the town embodies not only the creator’s realized dream — whose remains rest in the villa’s own church — but also a lasting lesson on how modern architecture can reconcile the lyrical beauty of historical landscapes with the functionality of contemporary living. - Unframed image dimensions: 37 x 45 cm / 54 x 62 cm with exclusive custom frame.
