Jean Gabriel CHAUVIN (1889-1976) Chauvin's work is characterized by its highly stylized and refined forms, sometimes abstract, sometimes figurative. It revolves around themes such as animality and human sexuality, nature, sensuality, architecture, technology, and futurism. Among these contemporaries are Constantin Brancusi, Jean Arp and Ossip Zadkine, with whom he exhibited in the 1950s. In 1962 he represented France at the Venice Biennale. Throughout his artistic career, Jean Chauvin obsessively photographed his sculptures, granting these images a certain autonomy. He based himself on a documentary aesthetic, through which all factors that could testify to his personality tend to disappear in order to highlight the sculpture itself, stripped of circumstances or context. To delicately magnify the contrast of lights and shadows, colors and materials, the works are placed on a hard white or black background support, within a very well-lit environment. A subtle combination of lights and shadows reveals elegant surface details and changes of plane. Dimensions: Total measurements: 65.2 cm × 48.1 cm × 1.8 cm. Artwork measurements: 48.5 cm × 31.5 cm.
