Jean-Frédéric Canepa (1894–1981) was a French painter and decorator, an iconic figure of the Provençal School of the 20th century. Born and died in Marseille, he profoundly influenced the local artistic scene by blending figurative tradition and modernity. Canepa stands out with a very linear style where line and light structure simplified forms and solid volumes reduced to the essentials. His preferred techniques are oil on canvas, watercolor, and charcoal. His works capture the light and life of the Midi through various themes: • Maritime scenes, trawlers and fishwives in the Old Port of Marseille. • Provencal landscapes (farms at Eygalières, olive trees, cypresses) and Camargue scenes (gardians). • Genre scenes (bullfights, bustling beaches, still lifes and bouquets).
