His works are characterized by an exceptionally pastel coloristic, relief-like surfaces, and a nearly sculptural materiality, with which he dissolved the boundaries between painting and sculpture. Through the sensitive use of delicate tones, dense color applications, and multi-layered structures, Fautrier developed a distinctive visual language that has profoundly influenced informel art.
