Fascinating illustrated edition of this four-volume set, a vast enterprise of historical, geographical, ethnographic, and monumental description devoted to two great regions of the Eastern Mediterranean and Near East, viewed through their peoples, their traditions, their costumes, their social practices, their religions, their cities and their monuments - The set seeks to offer French readers as complete a representation as possible of Egypt and Syria at the beginning of the 19th century, at a time when these territories arouse considerable interest in Europe due to travel, military expeditions, archaeological discoveries, and the growth of exploration narratives - This publication thus belongs to the great tradition of illustrated and documentary works that seek to acquaint Eastern civilizations with a European public that cannot observe them directly - Jean-Baptiste-Joseph Breton de La Martinière - Egypt and Syria, or Mœurs, Usages, Costumes et Monumens des Égyptiens, des Arabes et des Syriens - 1814 - Volume II, IV, V and VI (4 volumes of 6: Volumes I and III absent) - A.
