The exaggerated scale, bold colours and metallic decoration suggests that this was produced for stage, dance, ceremonial or performance use. Cranes are one of the most prolific symbols used within Japanese art, they are associated with longevity and celebration. Japanese Male Ceremonial or Stage Haori, Showa Period 1960-1980, woven with gilt threads in floral sinuous design, boards are inserted to the sleeves to emphasise the wide shape, pale blue silk lining, (2), Japanese Male Ceremonial or Stage Haori, Showa Period 1960-1980 Uchikake purchased from a specialist dealer in Tokyo, and Haori from a specialist dealer in New York. Uchikake is a formal Japanese outer robe traditionally worn by women on ceremonial occasions, most notably as bridal attire. Worn draped over a kimono without being tied at the waist, it is designed to trail along the floor, emphasising the richness of its materials and decoration. Uchikake are typically made from luxurious silk brocade and are elaborately woven or embroidered, often with the use of metallic threads incorporating Japanese symbolic imagery. From the late 19th century onwards, and particularly during the modern era, the uchikake was closely associated with weddings and formal ceremonies, serving as a symbol of status and refinement.
