East Asia, Japan, Meiji period. A oval face carved from wood and finished in creamy white lacquer, the classic onna mask of the Noh stage. Fine parallel strands of black hair part at the center of the brow and sweep across the temples, while black-outlined eyes are pierced with narrow square apertures for the actor's sight. Red lips frame a slightly parted mouth that reveals darkened teeth. Noh performers animate through tilt and light. The reverse preserves the carver's tool marks, with an incised circular mark at the forehead, presumably a maker's or workshop signature. Cords pass through holes at each temple for securing the mask to the head. Item # 205201
