Jan Abel WASSENBERGH (1689-1750) "La Continenza di Scipione" Oil on canvas, signed at the bottom center 92 x 107 cm without frame 99 cm x 114 cm with frame (old minor restorations) Jan Abel Wassenbergh (January 18, 1689, Groningen – ca. July 20, 1750, Groningen), was a Dutch painter of the 18th century. According to Jan van Gool and the RKD, he studied law first and then took drawing lessons from Jan van Dieren (about which Van Gool had never heard). Having achieved success, Wassenbergh went to Rotterdam in 1712, where he became a pupil of Adriaen van der Werff. [He married Johanna van Oijen after returning to Groningen in 1715, and attained notable success as a portraitist, history painter, and room decorator (creating ceilings, overdoors, and door decorations for the city nobility). Many of the decorations of his room still survive in their original installations. His daughter Elisabet Geertruda and son Jan Jr followed in their father’s footsteps, while daughter Gertruida Abelia loved fruit and flowers.
