james - Stampa Botanica 1806 Salix - Unknown

This is an original antique botanical print from 1806, specifically plate number 1806, which depicts the plant Salix bicolor (known in English as Shining Dark-green Willow, i.e., Salice bicolore). Details of the work • Author and engraver: The work was created by the renowned British naturalist and illustrator James Sowerby, as evidenced by the inscription at the lower margin: «Published by Jas. Sowerby London». • Original publication: The plate is part of the monumental scientific work English Botany; or, Coloured Figures of British Plants, a 36-volume collection published in installments between 1790 and 1814, whose scientific texts were curated by the founder of the Linnean Society, Sir James Edward Smith. • Technique: It is an antique copperplate etching/engraving, historically refined and hand-colored with watercolors. Authenticity and Certification The back of the framed piece bears an Italian commercial label functioning as a Certificate of Guarantee, which classifies the item as an «8th-century engraving», confirming the vintage nature of the print (19th century) and not a modern reproduction. The overall dimensions of the frame are approximately 16 cm in width and 23 cm in height.
