Jacques Delille - Les trois règnes de la nature - 1808

Jacques Delille. The three kingdoms of nature. Paris, Nicolle, Giguet and Michaud, Levrault, 1808, 309 pp., 282 pp. An octavo volume (220x150 mm), full calfskin, smooth spine adorned, red leather label pieces (bindings of the period). Wear and rubbing on the boards and spine. Interior fresh, rare foxing. Original edition of this poem in eight cantos; complete with the two engravings in the frontispiece. The poem successively embraces the three kingdoms of nature: mineral, vegetable and animal. Delille treats in verse numerous natural phenomena and objects: the atmosphere, the waters, the light, the heat, the winds, the volcanoes and the minerals; then plants, flowers, trees and vegetation; finally animals, insects, birds, fish and mammals. The text incorporates the scientific discoveries and knowledge of its time, notably those of Buffon, Linnaeus, Réaumur and Newton. The particular interest of this edition lies in the scientific notes by Cuvier and other savants, which accompany the poem and provide explanations relating to natural history. Two volumes bound together in one volume (complete)
