Scarce first edition of The Sinking of the Titanic by John B. "Jack" Thayer, privately published in 1940 and limited to 500 numbered copies, of which this is number 306. The 30-page book is signed by Thayer on the copyright page and boldly inscribed on the inside front cover, "To Benjamin Rush Esq. With Best wishes from Jack Thayer." Complete with the original tissue dust jacket. Thayer was a 17-year-old first-class passenger aboard RMS Titanic when it struck an iceberg on April 14, 1912. He survived the sinking, while his father, John B. Thayer Sr., vice president of the Pennsylvania Railroad, perished. His firsthand account provides a detailed recollection of the disaster, including his escape from the ship and subsequent rescue. Published nearly three decades after the sinking, The Sinking of the Titanic is one of the more significant firsthand accounts written by a survivor. Copies of this limited edition are scarce, particularly examples bearing Thayer's autograph, and this copy is additionally inscribed to Benjamin Rush. Book in excellent condition. Original tissue jacket exhibits some tears. Estimate $4,000 - $5,000
