JACINTO BARLÉS. Salomé. Oil on canvas. Signed, located in Paris and dated 1883. 158x110 cm Made for the 1883 Paris Salon. The work was exhibited that same year in the studio of the cabinetmaker Francesc Vidal i Jevellí at the Passatge del Crèdit ("El Diluvio: diario político de avisos, noticias y decretos: No. 206" (25 July 1883)). Reference literature: "La Ilustració catalana: 1a època", no. 088 (15 June 1883), p. 162 and p. 164 (reproduced). Jacinto Barlés (1865-1888) was a great Catalan painter and disciple of Simón Gómez, who stood out from a very young age in 19th Century academicism and symbolism. When he was only 14 years old, he moved to Paris, where he studied at the School of Fine Arts and won first prizes in 1880 and 1881. His international fame arrived in the same city in 1883, where he dazzled with his monumental works. Among them stands out "Salomé", a piece presented by Balclis that was widely praised by the press of the time. Unfortunately, his promising career was tragically cut short at 23 years old when he took his own life in Barcelona.
