Stunning antique silver hand-forged 'breidoppen' chain with jasseron links designed by the well-known Frisian silversmith J.H. van der Meulen from Joure, who was active from 1902 to 1925. He was known for his traditional, Old Dutch silver designs and fine engravings in the Biedermeier and Empire styles. This type of long chain without a fixed clasp, with two weighted ends, is also known as a lariat necklace or knot necklace. The jewelry can be tied or wrapped around the neck in various creative ways. Stamped with the silver mark “oud zwaardje” used from 1906 to 1953 and the master mark “VDM”. This type of jewelry is a beloved collectible for enthusiasts of antique Dutch applied art from the early 20th century. Chain length is 93.0 cm. Weight is 24.90 grams. After decades of careful collecting I have decided to part with (a portion of) my collection. I wish these special objects a place with a new enthusiast who understands the value of historic preservation.
