Ancient Map THE TREVISANO DIVIDED INTO ITS TERRITORIES AND DISTRICTS - From a New Projection Venice, At Antonio Zatta, 1783 With Privilege of the Most Excellent Senate Copper engraving by Giuliano Zuliani (G. Zuliani inc.), writings by Giovanni Pitteri (G. Pitteri scr.) Coloring contemporary to the watercolor of the borders and territories. Dimensions: about 46 × 35 cm (sheet). Magnificent double-page geographical map that depicts with great precision and richness of detail the entire territory of the Trevisano (Marca Trevigiana) in its late eighteenth-century administrative arrangement. The map is oriented with North at the top and shows: • the city of Treviso (highlighted in red) at the center; • the main centers (Bassano, Asolo, Castelfranco, Conegliano, Oderzo, Motta di Livenza, Noale, Mestre, Mirano, etc.); • the districts and territories (Territorio di Bassano, Distretto di Asolo, Contado di Val di Marino, Distretto di Conegliano, Distretto di Oderzo, Distretto di Motta, Distretto di Mestre, etc.); •tthe complete hydrography (Piave, Sile, Livenza, Musone, Zero, Marzenego, Bottenigo and numerous minor courses); • the mountainous reliefs of the Feltrino and the Montello represented in a pictorial way; • the borders with Friuli, Feltrino, Padovano and the Gulf of Venice. At the bottom left an elegant cartouche with a river landscape, tower, farm buildings and vegetation (clusters of grapes and sheaves of wheat, typical local products), which contains the full title. Graphic scale in Italian miles common of 60 per degree. Orientation “North or Tramontana” / “South or Mezzodì”. Importance and rarity This map belongs to the famous Atlante Novissimo by Antonio Zatta (Volume III, 1783-1784), one of the most complete, elegant and scientifically up-to-date atlases produced in Italy in the 18th century. Zatta, the most important Venetian cartographic publisher of the late eighteenth century, created a work based on the most recent geographical observations, with engravings of the highest quality and original coloring designed to facilitate reading and enhance aesthetics. The Trevisano map stands out for: • the refinement of the engraving (details of trees, tufts of grass, mountains drawn with great vigor); • the precision of toponymy and administration; • the beauty of the landscape cartouche, typical of Zatta’s “modern” style which abandons mythological motifs in favor of realistic and local scenes. Rarity: loose copies of the Atlante Novissimo, especially in good condition and with contemporaneous coloring well preserved, are sought after by collectors of Venetian and Italian eighteenth-century cartography. The presence of the privilege of the Venetian Senate and the quality of the specimen further increase its value. Condition: laid paper from the period with a central editorial fold; slight signs of time consistent with age (as visible in the photographs), but overall very good and attractive. A piece of great historical, geographical and decorative charm, ideal for collectors of antique cartography, enthusiasts of Venetian history, or for high-level display settings.
