Italy. Sovrano Militare Ordine Ospedaliero di San Giovanni d'Acri e San Tommaso

Italy. Sovrano Militare Ordine Ospedaliero di San Giovanni d'Acri e San Tommaso

Description (Sovereign Military Order of the Hospital of Saint John of Acre and Saint Thomas). Insignia with multicomponent construction in gilded bronze with red, light blue and dark blue enamels; gilt bronze weapons trophy with red and white enamels; without marks. The central obverse medallion depicts Saint John of Acre and Saint Thomas, surrounded by the inscription "MIL. AC HOSP. ORDO S. JOHAN ACCON. ET S. THOMAE" (Sovereign Military Order of the Hospital of Saint John of Acre and Saint Thomas); the central reverse medallion bears at the center the inscription "A.F. / MCCV" (founded in 1205) surrounded by the inscription "PRO FIDE VIRTUTE AC PIETATE" (For Faith, Virtue and Piety). Dimensions: 51.70 mm (width) x 103.3 mm (height, including the suspension element). Enamels intact; presence of oxidation and signs of wear on the medallion and on the gilding; worn with the original full-length sash; in excellent condition. Accompanied by the Order Plate: an eight-pointed star with groups of rays alternately smooth and faceted, ending with a small sphere; the insignia applied at the center reproduces the same gilded bronze decoration with red, light blue and dark blue enamels, depicting Saint John of Acre and Saint Thomas surrounded by the inscription "MIL. AC HOSP. ORDO S. JOHAN ACCON. ET S. THOMAE". The reverse presents a vertical pin and the maker’s mark "ALBERT & Co MILANO" at the center. Star dimensions: 76.90 mm (width) x 76.80 mm (height). Enamels intact; pleasant wear of the gilding; in excellent condition. It also includes a miniature bronze and enamel star, measuring 16.5 mm (width) x 18.2 mm (height, including the suspension attachment), to be worn on the original ribbon. The set is housed in its original conferment case, inside the lid, with partial housing for the cream-colored medal and slot for the sash; only one closing hook is functional; the exterior bears marked signs of wear, including damage to the faux-leather covering along the edges, but the case remains generally in good condition. Note: The Sovereign Military Order of the Hospital of Saint John of Acre and Saint Thomas is among the orders that existed in the late Middle Ages, during the Crusades, but later became extinct. It was revived in Italy in the 1960s–70s, probably by the so-called Prince Pierre Amoroso d'Aragona, who was later imprisoned for fraud. The image shows a Grand Cross insignia (likely a set) of the Sovereign Military Order of the Hospital of Saint John of Acre and Saint Thomas (Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of Saint John of Acre and Saint Thomas). Main features of the insignia The Cross: A red-enamelled cross with golden edges, superimposed on a golden star or radiating sun. The central medallion: Features a blue-enamelled border with Latin inscription and depicts two standing figures (resembling saints or knights). The Suspended/Trophy: Surmounted by a gilded metal plumed helmet with a white shield and a red cross at the center. The Ribbon: Light blue in color with black side bands and red fillets (or similar traditional order tones). The image shows a III Class neck set (Commander) of the Sovereign Military Order of the Hospital of Saint John of Acre and Saint Thomas (dated approximately to the 1960s). Main features of the insignia Central Cross: A red-enamelled cross with golden rays between the arms and a central medallion depicting traditional scenes and the order’s identifying inscription. Ribbon and chain: The blue ribbon bears characteristic black and red bands, surmounted by a trophy of arms and a gilded helmet with a cross-bearing shield. Set composition: Includes the main neck decoration, a miniature (mignon) and the corresponding eyelet button.
