Place de Monte Cavallo and the Palazzo del Quirinale at Pierre D'Atri, 142 Rue du Cours, No. 142 From: Nuova Raccolta delle principale vedute di Roma antica e moderna con le ruine della guerra. Disegnata dal vero l'Anno 1849 dim.: 10x14 lo specchio di stampa, 17x21 cm il foglio Beautiful view of the Quirinal Hill, once Monte Cavallo, with the group of the Dioscuri (the twins Castor and Pollux with their horses), which Pope Sixtus V Peretti had moved and placed at the center of the square, facing the ancient summer residence of the Popes. The imposing Egyptian granite obelisk in the square, coming from the nearby Mausoleum of Augustus, was set there by Pius VI Braschi in 1786, and below it the wide basin in gray granite originally situated in the Roman Forum and still in place. Engraving and burin on nineteenth-century paper, verso blank, wide margins, sporadic traces of oxidation in a specimen with excellent inking underscored by the delicate modern pastel coloring.
