All auctions / Coins & Banknotes / Italy. Medal 1873 Camillo Benso conte di Cavour (No reserve price)

Commemorative medal dedicated to Camillo Benso, Count of Cavour, made of metal with bruno-rose tones. On the obverse is depicted the bust of Cavour in profile, facing left. The figure is shown with an 19th-century hairstyle and attire, with a strongly characterized face and relief modeling. The portrait occupies a large part of the central field of the medal. Around the portrait runs an inscription in uppercase letters, in which the names “CAVOUR” and “CAMILLO” are clearly legible, identifying the commemorated figure. The medal is characterized by a raised edge and a relatively pronounced relief work. The dark, uniform patina gives the whole piece an antique and particularly evocative appearance. Historical meaning The medal celebrates the figure of Cavour, one of the main protagonists of the Italian Risorgimento and of national unification. As statesman and Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Sardinia, he played a fundamental role in the political and diplomatic process that led to the birth of the Kingdom of Italy in 1861.
