Fascinating old map of northeastern Italy, titled "Basse Lombardie ou sont les Estats de Venise...", drawn by the renowned royal cartographer Nicolas Sanson (1600-1667) and published in Paris in the rare posthumous edition dated 1679. This accurate geographical chart offers a detailed geopolitical representation of the era, covering a wide area of Northern Italy. Within it are delineated the territories of the Republic of Venice, the Duchy of Mantua, the Duchy of Parma, the Duchy of Modena, and the Prince-Bishopric of Trento. The exemplar bears in the cartouche the explicit date of 1679, testimony to the continuation of Sanson’s cartographic workshop by his sons Guillaume and Adrien. The map is distinguished by the elegant baroque cartouche placed at the bottom right, which encloses the title, the graphical scales, and the publication details "Chez l'Autheur". Masterfully engraved in copperplate by Abraham de la Plaese, the work shows a rich toponymy, the detailed course of the rivers (including the Po and its delta) and the topography of the territory. A piece of great historical and collecting interest for its particular chronological variant. Dimensions 45 x 62 cm It will be shipped by courier.
