Rare and Important lot of 92 vintage photographic postcards, all blank, devoted to Pompeii, Naples and Rome. Most are real gelatin bromide prints (Alfa-Brom paper, mentions « Vera Fotografia »), many with a beautiful characteristic silver sheen. Some cards printed in phototypy. Italian editions from the 1910s to 1930s, mainly Neapolitan and Roman. POMPEI (43 cards) With an exceptional and unattainable series of 12 Domenico Trampetti cards devoted to the frescoes of the Villa of the Mysteries, numbered 12016 to 12027. The period captions give a Christian reading of the Dionysiac frescoes (Annunciation, Catechesis, Agape, Communion, Passion, Resurrection, Vestment), typical of the early publications after the villa’s discovery. Three cards “Ultimi Scavi” from the excavations of Via dell’Abbondanza: electoral proclamations written by women, interior of the thermopolium. Plaster casts of victims including the dog’s imprint, the Cave Canem mosaic, portrait of Paquius Proculus and his wife, altar of the temple of Vespasian, Forum with smoking Vesuvius, Basilica, temples of Apollo, Jupiter and Isis, triangular Forum, houses of the Vettii, the Golden Lovers, the Faun and Diomedes, theatre, amphitheatre, gladiator barracks, tombs road, Stabiae gate, bakery and its mills. NAPLES AND VESUVIUS (17 cards) Two views of the smoking eruptive cone inside the Grand Crater, disappeared during the 1944 eruption. Four cards bear the souvenir stamp “Stazione Monte Vesuvio.” Vesuvio Observatory, Parasol pine panorama, Maschio Angioino, Castel dell’Ovo, port and Castel Sant’Elmo, panorama from San Martino, Posillipo, street scene at Pallonetto di Santa Lucia. Naples National Museum: Pallas of Herculaneum, relief of Orpheus, Eurydice and Hermes, Drunken Silenus, Dancing Faun. Publishers: V. and Domenico Trampetti, Ettore Ragozino (Galleria Umberto I), S.A.G.R.I. “Vera Fotografia”. ROME (32 cards) Masterpieces from the Capitoline Museums, the Vatican, the Lateran and the National Museum: Laocoön, Belvedere Apollo, Belvedere Torso, Dying Gaul, Capitoline Wolf, Capitoline Venus, Praxiteles’ Faun, Bowyer, Mosaic of the Doves, Discobolus, Canova’s Perseus, Apollo the Lyre-player, Danse des Corybantes, reliefs of the Lateran. Several cards captioned “Museo Laterano,” prior to the transfer of the collections to the Vatican in the 1960s. Publishers including “Grafia” Edizioni d’arte (Rome) and A. Traldi (Milan). CONDITION All cards are blank (unused, unstamped). Backs divided. Some pencil dealer annotations on the back, light stains, few rounded corners, one stained back. Vesuvian stamps and an oval dealer stamp are period. Overall very good condition for their age. A coherent and abundant set, ideal for archaeology enthusiasts, the history of photography and the Grand Tour.
