Italian school (XX) - Nobile Napoletana

A splendid 19th-century Neapolitan painting, realized in oil on canvas, depicting a young woman of extraordinary beauty, grace, and elegance. The work represents an fascinating example of Neapolitan female portraiture from the nineteenth century, characterized by a particular sensitivity in the rendition of facial features and expressiveness. The young protagonist presents large, deep, magnetic eyes, a delicately rosy complexion, and long raven-black hair that falls softly over the shoulders. The face, lit by a warm, soft light, is adorned with a scarcely hinted smile, which gives the composition a sweet, serene, yet enigmatic expression. The figure wears an elegant light dress, intersected by delicate sage-green shades, while small gold earrings complete the portrait’s refinement. The dark background heightens the brightness of the face and the depth of the gaze, creating a striking chromatic contrast that further enhances the protagonist’s beauty. Particularly interesting is the expressive quality of the composition, in which romantic taste, formal elegance, and painterly sensibility—traits that distinguish the Neapolitan artistic tradition of the 19th century—are found. The painting is enhanced by a magnificent gilded wooden frame, richly decorated with refined raised ornamental motifs, which gives the whole piece great elegance and a notable decorative impact. The work is sold complete with its golden frame, included in the sale. The painting shows natural signs of time, small abrasions, and traces of aging of the painted surface, visible in the photographs, which preserve its antique character.
