In paintings, memento mori (remember that you must die) and vanitas (vanity, emptiness) are admonitions about the transience of life. They invite reflection on the brevity of earthly existence, the futility of power and wealth, and the inevitability of death. Memento Mori is a classic iconographic theme of art and literature. When it combines elements such as death, a girl, ravens, a chessboard, a clock and books, it takes on a deep meaning tied to the futility of human ambitions in the face of the inexorability of time. Death and the Maiden: The pairing of these two figures evokes the famous Renaissance motif of "Death and the Maiden". The girl: Represents youth, beauty, purity and the beginning of life. She is the supreme symbol of earthly vitality. Death: Often depicted as a skeleton or the Grim Reaper, dramatically contrasts with the girl. The combined meaning: It reminds us that death does not spare anyone. Neither youth nor beauty can escape the final fate. It represents the fragility and transience of human life. The chessboard: Symbolizes fate and the inevitability of the end. In iconographic tradition, playing chess with Death represents humanity's desperate attempt to bargain or prolong their time. However, the game is always lost from the start: on the chessboard of life, Death always makes the last move. Moreover, it reminds us that once the game ends, the king and the pawn return to the same box (we are all equal before death). The Hourglass: A classical symbol of vanitas. It indicates the inexorable, measurable passage of time. The sand that falls reminds us that each passing second brings us closer to the end and that the time available to us is limited. The Clock: Similar to the hourglass, but with a more modern and mechanical connotation. It represents the mathematical precision of time that tightens, the idea of the "time that flies" (tempus fugit) and the impossibility of stopping the advance of days. The books: Represent knowledge, wisdom, philosophy and material culture. In the context of memento mori (and vanitas), they indicate that intellect and study cannot save man from oblivion. Human knowledge is limited and transient in the face of the eternity of death. The ravens: Animals traditionally psychopomps (that guide souls to the afterlife). Being scavenger birds, they are linked to decomposition, but they also symbolize prophecy, darkness, and the inevitable passage from life to the spiritual dimension or to nothingness.
