All auctions / Miscellaneous / Italian School (XVIII) - The Madonna of the Chalice
- Oil on canvas. Relined canvas. Inventory label on the back. - This elegant and charming Spanish post-Baroque Madonna is a profound expression of the intense spirituality that characterized Spanish art of the 17th and early 18th centuries. The work masterfully employs chiaroscuro, inherited from the tenebrist tradition, to draw the figure of the Virgin from darkness, bathing her face in a celestial light that emphasizes her piety and maternal grace. This dramatic handling of light is not only aesthetic but functional, guiding the viewer’s gaze toward the sacred figure and deepening the devotional feeling, key in the Counter-Reformation. The canvas is filled with symbolism characteristic of Baroque sacred images. The Virgin, in her gathered pose, accompanies reflection on writing, signaling the importance of the divine word. In parallel, the chalice symbolizing the Eucharist does not appear alone, but is filled with precious stones, a visual device that transfigures the sacrament and is a textual quote from the Apocalypse. The gems, evoking treasure and incalculable value, reaffirm that the Eucharist is the true symbol of salvation and the greatest spiritual wealth offered to humanity, a central concept in the liturgy and piety of the time. - Image dimensions without frame: 64 x 50 cm / 72 x 58 cm with magnificent framing.
