Interesting watercolor from the Neapolitan school of the 19th century, dated 1864 and bearing the author's signature, currently difficult to read. The work depicts a young Neapolitan fisherman in popular clothing, with a red cap, placed in the foreground on the seashore, with boat, nets and the catch. In the background a suggestive landscape of the Gulf of Naples with Vesuvius is recognizable. For iconographic features and clothing, the character appears plausibly inspired by the figure of Masaniello (Tommaso Aniello d’Amalfi), the famous protagonist of Neapolitan revolt of 1647. The watercolor shows notable attention to costume details, the figure and marine elements, with a pleasant luminosity and a palette still clearly legible. The work is housed in its elegant antique gilded frame in crabbed gold, which pleasantly completes the ensemble and bears normal signs of time compatible with the era. Technique: watercolor on paper Era: 19th century Date: 1864 Signature: present, but difficult to interpret Subject: Neapolitan fisherman, probably Masaniello Dimensions of the work: about 23 × 30 cm, excluding the frame with frame 232x40 Frame: antique, gilded in crabbed gold Provenance: Naples / private collectio
