Italian School of the 19th Century “Christ on the Way to Calvary and the Encounter with Veronica” Oil on metal sheet 19th century Painting: 84 × 60 cm With frame: 99.3 × 74.7 cm Description Interesting devotional painting from a 19th‑century Italian school, executed in oil on a metal support, depicting a episode of the Way of the Cross: Christ’s encounter with Saint Veronica during the ascent to Calvary. Christ, crowned with thorns and wrapped in a wide white robe, advances under the weight of the great wooden cross. To his right is Saint Veronica, shown holding the veil on which the Redeemer’s face miraculously appears. Behind Christ emerges a third figure, likely a soldier or an escort of the procession toward Golgotha. The composition is built with particular narrative clarity and a luminous chromatic, dominated by a warm golden background, on which the white of Christ’s robe and the reds, greens and pinks of the garments stand out. Of particular interest are the golden halos, defined by thin dark profiles, and the meticulous rendering of faces, hands and folds. The deliberately archaizing setting and the frontal arrangement of the figures recall models of Italian sacred painting of Renaissance tradition, reinterpreted according to 19th‑century devotional and historicist taste. Frame The work is presented within an elaborately molded wooden frame, of 19th‑century/storicist taste, finished in brown tones with dark inner profiles. The frame shows widespread signs of use, abrasions, small losses of finish and wear along the edges and the most exposed elements, coherent with its age and use. On the verso one can see the peripheral wooden frame, the support fastening elements and the suspension system. Condition Report The work presents overall good conservation condition considering its age and the particular nature of the support. From the photographic examination there is a widespread fine superficial craquelure, particularly legible in the halos and in more uniform areas, as well as light abrasions, small flaking, and minute losses of the pictorial film, more concentrated near the edges. Some irregularities and superficial markings compatible with the age of the work are present. The gold areas show physiological cracks and some small localized losses. The back of the metal sheet bears a bruneto- reddish patina/protective layer, with numerous scratches, abrasions, signs of use and areas where the underlying material shows through; along some margins there are superficial oxidation phenomena. The frame shows abrasions, scratches, wear and small losses of finish. No macroscopic deformations of the support are evident that would compromise legibility of the work. Any restorations, retouches or prior conservation interventions cannot be determined with certainty from a sole photographic examination and would require direct observation and, if necessary, UV lamp investigation.
