A Modern Wunderkammer - Sea Fan - Alcyonacea — This lot features a magnificent natural coral, commonly known as sea fan, originating from the waters of the Pacific Ocean. The specimen is mounted on an elegant handmade base with a contemporary design, turning it from a natural history relic into a true sculpture. Its most evident feature is the fan-shaped form, wide and extraordinarily intricate, which immediately draws the eye due to its size and structural refinement. Observed up close, the sea fan reveals an biological architecture of incredible perfection. Its structure develops from a central, more robust trunk, from which a dense network of interconnected branches emanates, creating a delicate organic lace. The color contrast is striking: the main branches present a dark, almost black shade, while the thinner terminations take on vibrant orange and golden hues. This bi-chromy, enhanced by a dark background, gives the entire composition depth and dynamism, highlighting every single detail of its complex weave. Sea fans are colonial organisms belonging to the phylum Cnidaria. Their iconic fan shape is not accidental but a sophisticated evolutionary strategy. The colony grows by positioning itself perpendicularly to the prevailing marine currents, thus maximizing the surface available for its countless polyps, tasked with filtering water to capture the plankton they feed on.
