This Asmat dagger from West Papua is made of cassowary bone and decorated with jungle fibre, seeds and coloured feathers. The carefully arranged materials give it a striking presence. Worn by an elder man as an object of status, it expressed his standing within the community. Field-collected in the 1990s, the dagger is in excellent condition, with its decorative elements preserved. A distinctive piece of Asmat material culture and an appealing addition to a collection of Oceanic art.
