Ca. AD 18001900 An Indian kulunk war hammer comprising a long wooden haft mounted with a finely worked steel head of asymmetrical form. One side terminates in a square hammer face decorated with a central floral motif, while the opposite side extends into a slender recurved beak intended for piercing armour. The head is further embellished with gold koftgari ornament of floral and geometric design, repeated on the upper finial and on the steel mounts at the upper and lower ends of the shaft. The haft is of dark wood, creating a strong contrast with the bright metallic fittings. The surfaces display areas of wear and minor oxidation consistent with age. Size: 56.5mm Provenance: Private London collection; US art market, before 2000. This item has been cleared against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter.
