Beautiful Satsuma koro with handles shaped like Karashishi, which translates as the mythological Japanese lion. The gold knob on the lid represents a Buddha's hand (in Japanese known as Busshukan or Bushukan), surrounded by the leaf lying flat and the stem of the fruit. This is a very beloved and traditional citrus fruit (Citrus medica var. sarcodactylis) in Japanese and Chinese art. The fruit is unique in that it is not round, but extends into long, finger-like segments that strongly resemble a praying hand. The koro is 17 cm high and 17 cm wide. The weight is 674 grams. The seal on the underside of the koro is vague and illegible; otherwise the koro is in very good condition.
