Curated collection of antique, vintage and modern rugs Important Antique Karachov Kazak Rug, South Caucasus, mid- to late 19th century Size: 7 ft 4 in x 5 ft 8 in (2.24 m x 1.73 m) Provenance: Property of a retired New York dealer A commanding Karachov Kazak with the bold central geometry, powerful corner devices, and saturated visual contrasts associated with this highly collectible South Caucasian group. Karachov designs achieve their impact through scale and clarity: a relatively small number of monumental forms occupy the field, creating an effect that is at once archaic and remarkably modern. Comparable Karachov Kazaks entered major collections during the formative years of American carpet collecting. The Metropolitan Museum of Art preserves a mid- to late-nineteenth-century example from the James F. Ballard Collection, woven entirely in wool with symmetrically knotted pile. The museum comparison demonstrates the long-standing recognition of this design group, but should not imply identical quality or provenance. The Met’s Karachov Kazak Condition Request Condition Report Lot #408 is in very good condition. The pile is full and even, with no visible signs of wear. There are very minor two areas of re-piling in the field. Both ends are original and complete; one end retains its original kilim finish, and both ends are hand-secured. The sides are securely finished. There is no dryness in the foundation. The rug is clean and floor-ready.
