Oiva Toikka – “Ruby Bird” / Rubiinilintu – Nuutajärvi - Iittala – Finland - circa 1990s A beautiful and particularly decorative hand-blown glass bird, designed by the world-renowned Finnish glass artist Oiva Toikka (1931–2019) for Nuutajärvi, Finland. This edition is typically referred to as the “Ruby Bird” (Rubiinilintu) and immediately stands out for its intensely ruby-red to orange-red transparent glass body. The glass features a rich pattern of dark and metallic/luster-colored oval decorations. Depending on the light, stunning nuances of red, orange, gold, and almost black emerge. The bird has an elegant, elongated form with a long, pointed, extended tail and a contrasting dark, iridescent head. Due to the artisanal production process, every Toikka bird is unique: small differences in shape, color progression, glass texture, and decoration are part of the character of mouth-blown art glass. Oiva Toikka is regarded as one of the most important Finnish glass designers of the 20th century. His famous Birds by Toikka are today among the most recognizable and collected objects of Finnish glass design. Production period: 1990s, Nuutajärvi, Finland.
