History: This precious icon of Christ Pantocrator, created especially for a special occasion by the renowned Moscow silversmith Ivan Khlebnikov, is a particularly remarkable example of tempera painting from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The Saviour’s expressive and mystical face is rendered using the “otborka” technique, characterized by very fine brushstrokes, employed in the prestigious icon workshops of Vasily Guryanov, Mikhail Dikairev, Yakov Iepanitchnikov, and Vasily Chitov. Christ is clad in shades of orange and green, enhanced by a subtle layer of brilliant gold, in delicate harmony with the gilded, radiating frame adorned with scrollwork. The understated color palette is expressively accentuated by the superb cloisonné enamel halo, highlighted by a border of tricolor flowers and a predominantly turquoise background.
