Icon - Madonna and Child - Wood, silvered metal, hand-painted, velvet

Russian Orthodox devotional icon depicting the Mother of God of Kazan (Kazanskaya), one of the most venerated and emblematic Marian images in the Russian Orthodox tradition, traditionally considered its protectress and patron. The sacred composition shows the Theotokos three-quarter length with the Child Jesus upright, giving a blessing. The visible faces and hands are hand-painted on a panel with fine, expressive brushwork faithful to the canons of classical Russian iconography. At the top of the riza you can notice the engraved medallions containing the traditional sacred monograms. The painting is enclosed and embellished by a repoussé and chasing metal frame (riza or oklad), rich in decorative geometric and phytomorphic details. A wide radiating halo encircles the sacred figures, highlighting the relief of the details. The surface presents a suggestive natural oxidation and a dark antique patina that enhance its authenticity and historical charm. The work, dating to the first half of the 20th century, is well structured and affixed to the panel with its original small perimeter nails. The back of the wooden panel is entirely covered by an elegant burgundy velvet. The original metal suspension ring for wall mounting is integrated. Height: about 22.2 cm Width: about 17.7 cm In overall excellent conservation condition. Solid and intact structure. Oklad/riza perfectly preserved without significant deformations. Natural patina of the period present.
