Iatmul Style Carved Wood Slit Gong, Papua New Guinea

Iatmul style carved wood slit gong from the Middle Sepik River region of Papua New Guinea. The utilitarian object is hewn from a single piece of dense hardwood with a naturally curved profile and features a raised handle at the rear. The assembly includes an inset iron plate secured by a transverse metal wedge and a repurposed iron horseshoe bracket at the forward end. A multi-strand wire binding reinforces the tapered front section. The piece is mounted on a modern steel museum-grade display stand with two vertical supports and a rectangular base.
