The Memorial Medal for the Liberation of Transylvania was instituted on 4 September 1940. Hungary regained the northern part of Transylvania (then part of Romania) in the summer of 1940 through the Second Vienna Arbitration. This area had been lost to Hungary after World War I by the Treaty of Trianon. The medal was awarded to soldiers of the Hungarian army and the gendarmerie who were involved in the peaceful march and the occupation of this recovered territory.
