HUMAN FIGURE WITH KANGAROOS Melanesia, Papua New Guinea, Massim region, Milne Bay Province Wood with lime highlights H. 22 cm – W. 14 cm – D. 8 cm Provenance: - Acquired from Lawsons, Sydney, 1989 - Harry Beran Collection, no. 814/HB434 A human figure surmounted by two tree kangaroos. This strange and enigmatic composition, depicting a highly stylized figure smoking a cigarette with his head passing between two branches of a slingshot-shaped tree, long graced Harry Beran’s desk. The magnificently crafted base, which allows the work to stand upright like a work of art, indicates that this piece, though superbly sculpted, originated as an item produced for sale to foreign visitors.
