He largely developed as a self-taught artist and became known for his impressionistic landscapes of Limburg and the Belgian Ardennes. His paintings are characterized by lively brushwork, a rich use of color, and a particular attention to light and atmosphere. Especially the picturesque Geuldal formed an important source of inspiration, which earned him the nickname ‘the painter of the Geul valley’. In 1950 he founded the Valkenburg Art Circle Henri Jonas. His œuvre forms an atmospheric tribute to the South Limburg landscape.
