Janssen ranks among the most significant German artists of the 20th century, and his works show clear influences from masters such as Albrecht Dürer and Francisco de Goya. Similar to Dürer in his copper engravings and to Goya in his Los Caprichos, Janssen used printmaking to depict complex, often disturbing scenarios that delve deeply into the human psyche. A central theme in Janssen’s work is obsessive self-observation, bringing him close to Egon Schiele and Francis Bacon. Schiele, known for his unflinching self-portraits, and Bacon, who often depicted the human figure as a distorted and suffering being, shared with Janssen an interest in exploring the inner self. Janssen’s self-portraits, frequently realized as etchings or drawings, reflect a similar intensity and openness and address the fragility and transience of human life in a deeply personal way. Janssen’s studies of nature and his engagement with the natural world are set in a melancholic and often morbid context, reminiscent of Odilon Redon. Redon, a Symbolist who explored the dark and mysterious sides of nature and of the human psyche, influenced Janssen in his portrayal of the uncanny and the abyss that lurk behind the visible world. Janssen’s works, like Redon’s, reflect a fascination with that which lies beyond the obvious, and show a deep engagement with nature as a symbol of human emotions and fears. Horst Janssen remains a unique artist who wove together influences from Dürer, Goya, Schiele, Bacon and Redon into a powerful and personal visual language.
