“Commentariorum de bello Aphrodisiensi libri quinque“, Horatio Nucula, 1552. Very rare historical work on the siege and conquest of the Tunisian coastal town Mahdia (Aphrodisium) by the troops of Emperor Charles V in the year 1550. The account describes the military events of the campaign against the fortress controlled by Ottoman corsairs and contains numerous war- and contemporary historical details about the fighting in the central Mediterranean. Particularly noteworthy is the two-page woodcut map, which shows southern Sicily as well as the coast of Tunisia. There is also a woodcut coat of arms of Pope Julius III on the title page. Bound in a flexible parchment binding using an older manuscript. The binding cords are missing. The pages are at times somewhat stained and waterstained. The title page bears a handwritten ownership note as well as a defect due to a removed ex-libris. The following leaf likewise shows, at the same height, a defect with some loss of text. The reverse of the title page also shows a somewhat larger stain, presumably from the former ex-libris. Unfortunately, on numerous pages the outer margins stick together. Collation: 368 (recte 358) pages, 4 leaves Dimensions: 16.5 x 11.5 cm
