Revolutionary War manuscript military order dated May 15, 1779, Providence, Rhode Island, signed "Horatio Gates" as Major General. Addressed to Brigadier General James Mitchell Varnum, the document directs the payment of three hundred dollars to Seth Chapin for public service, with his receipt endorsed upon the order serving as a sufficient warrant. Also signed by Isaac Pierce, aide-de-camp, by Gates's command, with Chapin's signed acknowledgment of receipt at the bottom. Major General Horatio Gates commanded the American army at Saratoga in 1777, where the British surrender marked a decisive turning point in the Revolutionary War. This document dates to his subsequent command of the Eastern Department, headquartered at Providence, and concerns the administration of military expenditures during the war. The document has attractive, legible handwriting and a prominent Gates signature, with original folds, scattered toning and some staining. Framed alongside an engraved portrait of Gates. Document measures 7.5 x 9.5 inches as seen. Overall framed dimensions 19.5 x 17 inches. Not examined out of frame. Estimate $800 - $1,200
