1931 'Fireman' $50 Colour Trial in 65-EPQ HONG KONG (SAR). Chartered Bank of India, Australia & China. 50 Dollars, 1.7.1931. P-56cts. Color Trial Specimen. PMG Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ. Fabulously rare 'Fireman' $50 colour trial in gem grade, printed by Waterlow and Sons. Seen here in stunning grey-blue, purple, and tan colours, a stark and refreshing departure from the issued colours in brown and peach. Virtually perfect preservation of colours and paper. This $50 note was issued only for a few years, from 1931 to 1934, as the denomination was, and still is, not widely used. Therefore, colour trials and specimens are all exceedingly rare and issued notes are scarce. A quick search in the archives revealed only one example, graded 66-EPQ, sold in recent years and given the rarity of this type, we are confident there will be immense interest on the day of the live auction. A nice complement to the $5, $10 and $100 colour trials we sold in April 2026. Estimate: $50,000 - $75,000.
