Finest Certified 1941 George VI Cent A Legendary Rarity HONG KONG (SAR). Cent, 1941. London Mint. George VI. PCGS MS-65. KM-24; Mars-C7; Prid-192. An immaculate Gem example of this VERY RARE and famous Hong Kong issue. Showcasing surfaces well beyond virtually all other survivors, this example boasts silky luster through the fields with subtle blue iridescence mixing with the brown coloration in the centers. At the edges, remnants of original red appear on both sides. As one might expect from a Gem, very few marks appear to the unaided eye. An absolutely legendary survivor, tied with one other at PCGS and unmatched (*) at NGC. Pridmore accounts that only Proof examples were known at the time of his writing, and that a three year search of Hong Kong turned up no business strike examples. Since that time, examples have come to light, suggesting a miniscule survival rate from the original mintage. Many speculations have arisen to explain the apparent disparity of the recorded mintage and the survival rate of the business strikes. Hong Kong by the end of December 1941 had fallen into Japanese occupation, after fierce fighting between the British Colonial Forces and the Imperial Japanese military began on the same day as the attack on Pearl Harbor. It is possible these pieces were never released or fell into the hands of the Japanese, likely being melted by either side as copper was a vital war material. *While NGC's population report cites one MS-66 for the issue (and no MS-65s), that coin was taken out of the holder and now resides in a PCGS MS-65 holder. Subsequently, that PCGS MS-65 was offered in a Spink Hong Kong auction, where it hammered for 370,000 HKD (approximately $56,000 when accounting for the buyer's premium). Estimate: $40,000 - $50,000.
