Hondo, Texas. $10 1882 Brown Back. Fr. 490. First NB. Charter #5765. PCGS Banknote Very Fine 20. Nestled in Medina County roughly 45 minutes from downtown San Antonio, Hondo is your quintessential "one-bank town" that is somewhat scarce per the National Bank Note Census. Here a total of 30 non-institution notes are recorded and the bulk of the figure is representative of the Series of 1902 and Series of 1929. By contrast, notes issued under the Series of 1882 account for 20% of the recorded population with a number of Brown Backs recorded among the survivors including this handsome example which saw even circulation before an unlikely survival. Burdened with luscious penned signatures attributable to Cashier Isaac Wilson and President George Winston Jones along with an overprinted "S" regional indicator first introduced in 1902 seen alongside serial numbers that represent the pre-1903 font, bidders would be wise to consider that this is likely the earliest surviving National on this scarce institution from South Texas. PCGS Banknote comments "Edge Splits and Damage." Estimate: $1,000 - $1,500. Provenance: From the Jack Copeland Currency Collection, Part IV. Click here for certification details from PCGS Banknote.
