HOMERE / Antoine HOUDART de LA MOTTE. The Iliad. Poem. With a discourse on Homer. By Monsieur de la Motte of the French Academy. 1714, at Grégoire Dupuis, Paris. 1 vol. in-8 bound, of CLXXX-207-15 pages. Magnificent 19th-century glazed tawny full-leather binding, spine with five raised bands adorned with compartments, fillets, rosettes, borders, and the title, stamped in fine gold, triple gold fillet framing the boards, all edges gilt, gilded roulettes on the fore-edges. Work illustrated by a frontispiece and 12 steel engravings hors texte by Roettiers and Nattier, engraved by Edelinck and Chauffournier. First edition of La Motte's translation, bringing a new perspective to this text, which had been set aside by the perceived mediocre quality of earlier translations. Original edition of the Discours de Houdart de La Motte on the Iliad and of his ode 'La Critique', at the end of the volume. Very fine copy, in a sumptuous pastiche binding.
