Scotland, edited by John Hooker [et al], 2 vol. only (of 3) in 1, second edition, black letter, double column, titles within engraved woodcut borders (McKerrow and Ferguson 147a,148, 122, and 138), numerous ornamental initials, cancels and several ff. supplied from later editions, ?lacking first initial blank, and blank f. at end vol. 1, ff. stained, browned, and foxed, later half vellum binding, boards detached, lacking spine, very worn, John Harrison, George Bishop, Rafe Newberie, Henry Denham, and Thomas Woodcocke, folio, 1586-7; sold not subject to return. *** When the second edition was published, Queen Elizabeth I disapproved of sections relating to Anglo-Scottish relations, the Babington plot, and Leicester's campaign in the Low Countries, and ordered them to be removed. The recalled book resulted in numerous cancels as listed in ESTC S122178 and Keith I. Maslen, "Three eighteenth-century reprints of the castrated sheets in Holinshed's Chronicles", The Library, Third Series XIII (1958), 120-124. Well-known as a key source for Shakespeare's Richard II and III, Henry VI-VI, Macbeth and Cymbeline, this work provides a fascinating narrative of the Elizabethan period.
