HOLAS (Bohumil). — Traditional Arts of Africa. Paris, Hatier, 1967. Narrow 8vo, 158 pp., paperback with an illustrated black-and-green cover. A richly illustrated volume featuring 75 black-and-white plates, devoted to the traditional arts of sub-Saharan Africa and, in particular, to the collections of the Abidjan Museum. A study by ethnologist Bohumil Holas, a specialist in West African societies and arts, and author of works on the Senufo, the Kono, and the arts of Côte d’Ivoire. The book presents sculptures, statuettes, masks, and ritual objects, contextualizing them within their religious and social functions. The 1967 Hatier edition is well-documented in bibliographies devoted to African arts. A distinctive feature of this copy: a signed autograph dedication by the author, in ink on the title page: “A bundle of wood from the lowlands of Amboyon the fallen man on his stomach and Arab, his member erect” B. Holas Condition: good copy. Cover preserved under clear protective sleeves, with some minor scuffing and signs of wear. Interior clean; slight weakness visible at the title spine. Handwritten dedication on the title page.
